Palm Species Traits Determine Soil Nutrient Effects on Seedling Performance

چکیده
Environmental gradients influence plant establishment, survival, and functional traits. Along the Panama Canal Isthmus there is a strong rainfall gradient with an underlying mosaic of soil types ranging in nutrient availability. In this region, tree species distribution patterns are correlated phosphorus availability patterns, but how understory such as palms relate to these factors less clear. We hypothesized that due greater resource use efficiency optimal biomass allocation, specialist will have seedling performance growing home sites compared not occurring there. To test hypothesis, we used two ( Chamaedorea tepejilote Geonoma congesta ) generalist cuneata var. pinnatifrons ), for four measured traits on seedlings assessed their shade house field transplant experiments using five soils. Soils were sourced from which varied rainfall, distributed along lowland tropical forests Isthmus. shadehouse experiment, leaf determined by rather than However, relative growth rate interactions between soil, weak support home-site advantage one species. survival was strongly related dry season water tended high at other higher rainfall. Together, results suggest palm species-specific responses combination This indicates while nutrients determines both therefore distributions moisture gradient.

Sod cutting and soil biota effects on seedling performance
Sod cutting (i.e. top soil removal) is a restoration management option for enhancing seedling establishment and for lowering the nutrient concentration in eutrophicated soils of nutrient-poor species-rich grasslands. Removal of the upper soil changes not only abiotic soil properties but may also affect the resident soil community. We investigated the effects of sod cutting on the establishment ...
متن کاملSeedling performance trade-offs influencing habitat filtering along a soil nutrient gradient in a tropical forest
Recent studies have provided evidence that trade-offs in biomass allocation, resource-use efficiency, and anti-herbivore defense influence seedling performance and distribution across soil types. Our previous research suggested that soil nutrient availability acted as a filter for understory palm community assembly and species coexistence in a lower montane forest in western Panama. Here, we ex...
متن کاملEffects of Palm Kernel Expellers on Growth Performance, Nutrient Digestibility, and Blood Profiles of Weaned Pigs
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of palm kernel expellers on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and blood profiles of weaned pigs. A total of 88 weaned pigs (6.94±0.76 kg body weight [BW]; 28 d old) were randomly allotted to 2 dietary treatments (4 pigs/pen; 11 replicates/treatment) in a randomized complete block design (sex as a block). The dietary treatments w...
متن کاملEffects of Superabsorbents on Growth and Physiological Responses of Date Palm Seedling under Water Deficit Conditions
Irrigation is an inevitable part of agriculture which determines crop yield and thus food security. In modern era of agriculture, crop yield is determined on the basis of crop production per unit of water-use instead of crop production per land unit area. Deficit irrigation is introduced as a strategy for controlling water resources that leads to water resource preservation. Date palm requires...
متن کاملPhysical defence traits enhance seedling survival of neotropical tree species
1. Physical defence traits of stems and leaves should enhance biomechanical strength and survival of seedlings. For eight neotropical tree species that differ widely in lifehistory strategies, we compared stem and leaf biomechanical traits of 1 and 7-monthold seedlings grown in the shaded forest understorey and in the laboratory. 2. Material traits (biomechanical traits per unit volume, mass or...
